My Bass Heroes (well, a few of them!)

Well, the Darkness has passed, and no, not the bird-flu infected Suffolkers, but the depression I get hit by from time to time. All swings and roundabouts in my head - manically happy at times, and shittingly depressed at other times!! It's a funny head I've got!

1. ) John Entwistle

Have to start with him don't I?! Showed the world what a bass solo was, pioneered roundwound strings, and the Marshall Stack to name some milestones of rock bass.
Favourite tracks:

Talk Dirty
Dancing Master
905

2.) Bakithi Kumalo

Name might not mean much to people, but you're bound to have heard his fretless bass on a Paul Simon record. He's worked with many illustrious folk, including Herbie Hancock, and Mickey Hart, the Grateful Dead other drummer (not Bill K!).
Favourite tracks:

You Can Call Me Al
Light Rain
Seems Like Old Times

3.) Jaco Pastorius

Speaking of fretless basses, no list would be complete without the genius of Jaco. Someone who told his brother at 19, 'I am the best bass player in the world', and his brother believed it. So did the rest of the world when he burst onto the scene with his self-titled debut album. Problems lead to him being beaten unconscious outside a Florida club, and he died soon afterwards. had he lived to even middle-age, what songs would he have come out with?
Favourite tracks:

Portrait of Tracy
Donna Lee
Come On, Come Over (the song that re-united Sam and Dave)

4.) James Jamerson

The man who introduced the electric bass to the world, he was the man who drove Motown. Nuff said.
Favourite tracks:

Ain't Too Proud To Beg
My Girl
I was Made To Love Her

Well, there's 4 of the best in my opinion!!

Sorry that was me..I didn't read the whole post- sorry - my daughter was being needy!

Anyway - the gist of it was well of COURSE Entwistle is #1.
What a HUGE loss for us...I am still so sad.

I loved Jaco Pastorius...yeah he got shot now I remember - he was schizophrenic I believe. He trashed one of my friend's car! (well he was a fellow dj in college).

If you need a date for the ITA iTunes thingy - don't hesitate to call me! I have loads of FF miles and my hubby is used to farming me out for Rachel/Pete events!

Kidding.
Maybe you will meet the woman of your dreams!!

Have fun!!

Oh and glad you are feeling better Ben.
Yeah I know how it is...
It's just something you have to manage, but it's very very hard when you get sucked into the darkness.
I am glad it's no longer taboo to talk about it, because, clearly, we are not alone!

Hi Ben,

I don't think anyone comes close to John...just a one of a kind...

I think Jack Cassidy from Hot Tuna is also an amazing bass player...the kind of bass that you FEEL...like John's, but again, NO ONE is like John...

I just wanted to check in, and see how you are...Sue is right, I am glad it is no longer taboo to talk about depression....If it helps you to know, that others are thinking of you, and wishing you well, then I wanted you to know, that I am thinking of you, and hoping you are in a good place.

Take care, Ben

xxSue
