Wilson Pickett R.I.P.
The legendary Wilson Pickett has died, at the age of 64. Nicknaming himself 'the Wicked (Wilson) Pickett', he became known as Atlantic's answer to the Godfather of Soul, James Brown.
Wilson's distinctive energetic and fierce vocals distinguished himself from other Soul artists on both the Atlantic and the Stax/Volt record labels. Best remembered for hits such as 'Land Of A 1000 Dances', In The Midnight Hour' and 'Mustang Sally', Wilson continued to enjoy popularity throughout Europe when Disco music single-handedly destroyed American Soul. He was a regular performer on the European circuit, and indeed was performing up until the end of 2004.
A year of poor health had forced Wilson from the road, but he never lost his desire to be back in front of the crowd performing his hits from the years. His management company informed the press of Wilson wanting to hit the stage, but alas, it wasn't to be.
A man who encompassed the aggressive style of soul singing, Wilson's talents will be sorely missed by all those who knew him, and for all fans of soul, the man from Detroit's spirit will live on through the records he made.
